19,000 participants test Tough Mudder skills at Toronto event

TORONTO – Making its debut in Toronto this weekend, the ‘toughest event on the planet’ may actually be just that – participants will have to go through obstacles with names like the Arctic Enema, Fire Walker and Electroshock Therapy. The event encourages ‘mudders’ to test their ‘mental grit’ and all-around strength while overcoming one obstacle after another.

Combining 25 obstacles spanning a 16-kilometre course of unforgiving terrain, nearly 19,000 participants and 8,500 spectators will head to Mount St. Louis Moonstone just outside of Toronto to get wet, freezing cold, muddy and even be exposed to 10,000 volts of electric shock.

They’ve all paid $90CAN per day to endure, at times, excruciating pain on a quest for a personal challenge.

Toronto’s Tough Mudder is the second event to be held in Canada after its debut in Whistler, B.C.

Created by Will Dean, a former counter-terrorism expert for the British government and Guy Livingston two years ago, the event is a leader in the booming obstacle course industry.

It’s also helping make a difference – to date, the event has raised more than $3.5 million for the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity that helps injured service men and women.

Sarah Huter, Director of Marketing and Promotions for Mount St. Louis says they’re proud to partner with a premium adventure company with a conscience. While organizing the event for the mountain has been a massive undertaking, Huter says it’s nothing compared to what the participants will have to face.

“Unless you’ve trained for Tough Mudder, expect to be owned,” says Huter.
