An active shooter situation at a Walmart in Texas has ended after a suspect who took at least one person hostage was shot dead Tuesday afternoon.

The City of Amarillo Emergency Department said officers and the fire department arrived “on the scene of an active shooter incident” at the retail store around 12:30 p.m. ET.

Randall County Sheriff’s Office said one person armed with a gun was holding at least one victim hostage.

“There are reports of an armed subject inside who may have hostages,” the police department said in a statement. “All residents are urged to stay away from that area.”

At around 1:15 p.m. police had not confirmed any gunshot victims and it “appears to be a workplace violence type event.”

Multiple agencies are at the scene including Amarillo SWAT, police said.

It is unclear how many people were inside at the time of the incident.

Police have yet to release details about the suspect.

In a statement, Walmart said two of its employees were held in the hostage situation.

“As soon as we heard about the situation at our store in Amarillo, Texas, we acted immediately. All customers and our two associates who were held hostage are safe,” the company said in a statement. “This was a very difficult situation and we are thankful for the quick response from law enforcement.”
