A 57-year-old man has been arrested in connection with two suspicious fires in recent months.

“He is known to police and currently we are recommending charges to Crown counsel of two counts of arson to endanger life,” said Saanich Police Sgt. Jereme Leslie.

The first incident occurred April 9 when a fire broke out inside the Home Depot in the 3900 block of Shelbourne Street.  Then on May 22, police received several 911 calls about a large structure fire in the neighbouring block.

“Never want to experience that again.”

Saanich Police Major Crime Detectives have spoken to witnesses, reviewed surveillance video and searched for forensic evidence on scene. The total loss is estimated to be between seven and ten million dollars.

If convicted, the suspect could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

“Definitely nice to know that the guy is found and that he won’t be doing this again for a while,” said Paban Tarhar, an affected tenant.

Crown has yet to approve the charges. The suspect is expected to appear in court on Friday morning.
