On Monday, the province introduced the Liquor Retail Modernization Act.

It would establish a single set of rules for all businesses that sell alcohol in Saskatchewan.

The government says this will create a level playing field.

The amended act would apply to purchasing alcohol for resale at a wholesale price, hours of operation, product selection and chilling of products.

Saskatoon brewer and Paddock Wood Brewing Company founder Steve Cavan says he hopes the change is the first of many.

For example, he wants to be able to sell his beer directly to private stores.

“This is the first baby steps and I am looking for the direct deliveries and those, say, closer market manipulations that will be really beneficial to the brewing industry,” Cavan said.

Currently, Cavan says he has to ship his product to Regina, which is then shipped back to the purchasing retailer in Saskatoon.
