‘Goonies’ sequel: Sean Astin teases follow-up to classic ’80s movie

The prospect of a Goonies 2 isn’t a new one. It’s brought up every time Sean Astin, who played the braced-teeth pre-teen Mikey in the classic ’80s film, attends a comic-book festival or convention.

Usually Astin steps around the question, answering with vagueries or broad statements, expressing his positivity that it’ll happen “one day,” or it’s “a lock” to happen.

Over the weekend at Phoenix’s ComicCon, Astin was a bit more specific in his answer, sending Goonies fans into a frenzy of speculation that the sequel is actually going to happen. (You can hear his answer in the video, below.)

“In the original Goonies, it’s not the only time that Mikey will come face-to-face with One-Eyed Willy,” said Astin, referring to the pirate the kids encounter in the film (his skeleton, anyway).

His comment seems to indicate that something is in the works, and it won’t be long before we hear something official about the upcoming Goonies sequel.

Over the past few years, several members of the cast of the 1985 movie, including Corey Feldman and Josh Brolin, have expressed interest in reprising their roles in the much-rumoured sequel.
