Hot and sunny weather turned into unstable, stormy conditions Tuesday evening in Alberta.
Severe thunderstorm warnings began to pop up around 7 p.m. as several cells capable of strong winds, large hail and heavy downpours began their approach from the western foothills.
Environment Canada estimates that hail from some of the cells could be as large as toonies or ping pong balls.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said.
Storms are expected to develop in the foothills but move eastwards throughout the evening.

“Some of these thunderstorms may persist into the overnight hours,” Environment Canada added.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall. Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when those conditions are imminent or occurring for a specific region.
