Alberta police issue more than 3,500 speeding tickets over long weekend

EDMONTON – Speeding continues to be a problem on Alberta highways, with police handing out more than 3,500 tickets over the long weekend.

Those numbers include 655 speeding tickets issued to motorists on Highway 63 to and from the Fort McMurray area.

RCMP says the numbers are about average for a summer long weekend.

Mounties and provincial traffic sheriffs also issued 266 tickets for alcohol-related offences, including 29 24-hour licence suspensions.

The province recently announced measures to improve traffic enforcement on Highway 63, including assigning more officers to patrol the dangerous road.
