2 Manitobans selected for 2016 Continental Junior Triathlon Championships

WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s Kyla Roy and Payton Ryz are among the 16 athletes chosen to represent Canada at next month’s 2016 CAMTRI Junior Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The event will pit the top junior triathletes from North, South and Central America against each other.

Roy has been on a massive rise since winning her first national event in 2014. The 17-year-old climbed to the top of the podium at both the Canadian Junior Championships and National Junior Series in 2015. She also finished the year ranked fourth in the Pan American Female Junior Rankings.

Ryz also had a memorable 2015 season, winning the Triathlon Canada Youth National Championships. The 16-year-old also placed first in two other national races she competed in.

Roy qualified for the 2016 CAMTRI Junior Championships based on her top-three finish at the 2015 Triathlon Canada Junior National Championships. Ryz was chosen to compete by Triathlon Canada’s high performance director.

“The future is certainly bright for our sport with this group of rising stars who have tremendous potential racing both domestically and internationally,” said Triathlon Canada’s Director of Talent and Development Alan Carlsson in a statement.

“Not only do we want our team to gain valuable international race experience but we are also confident each of these athletes will achieve personal best performances and secure Canada a full quota of three entries at the 2016 Junior World Championships.”
