WINNIPEG – A back injury has forced Winnipeg Jets defenceman Grant Clitsome to call it a career.
The 31-year-old announced his retirement from professional hockey Wednesday. Clitsome played seven seasons in the NHL including four with the Jets. He did not dress last season after failing his physical. Clitsome had previously undergone two back surgeries in as many years.

“It’s tough when something unexpected and out of your control suddenly ends your career,” Clitsome said in a statement.
“Despite the circumstances, I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream and play in the NHL.”
Clitsome was claimed off waivers by the Jets in February 2012. The team signed him to a three-year contract worth $6,200,000 the following January.
“I would like to thank the Winnipeg Jets organization for me treating me so well from day one,” Clitsome said. “It truly was a special place to play and I’m proud to retire as a Jet.”
Clitsome was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the ninth round, 271st overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
He finishes his career with 15 goals, 56 assists and 98 penalty minutes in 205 NHL games.
