Two suspects are in custody after a Good Samaritan was carjacked in Kamloops.
David Retzer came upon a serious car crash Friday and stopped, got out of his car and offered to help. But that’s when he became a victim himself.
“It’s something that might happen in a movie, but you would never expect it in real life,” he says.
RCMP say they located a vehicle on Friday afternoon that they believe is connected to a series of lottery ticket thefts. As an officer waited for the white SUV to be towed away, two people got into the vehicle and fled the scene.
Later in the day, a white SUV slammed into a Hyundai at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Columbia Street. When Retzer got out of his car and checked on the people in the Hyundai, the driver of the SUV made his move.
“It was pure disbelief. I’m still thinking how did he get out of his car, how did that happen?”
Police say a 42-year-old man and 33-year-old woman were arrested in Vernon on Saturday following a report of a lottery ticket heist.
They are in custody and are expected to appear in court on Monday in Kamloops.
The Independent Investigation Office of BC is investigating the role of police as it relates to the injuries of others involved.
The two people in the Hyundai remain in hospital.
Retzer says that as unfortunate as the situation is, it won’t dissuade him from being a Good Samaritan in the future.
“This is a one in a million thing. I’m not going to not stop next time.”
