Montreal cyclist in serious condition after being hit by a Jeep Cherokee

MONTREAL – A cyclist is in hospital in serious condition after he was run over by a Jeep Cherokee in downtown Montreal Thursday at 8:50 this morning.

The motorist and cyclist were heading westbound on de Maisonneuve Blvd. W. between University St. and McGill College Ave.

According to witnesses, the Jeep’s driver and the cyclist appeared to have been arguing only moments before, at the corner of University and de Maisonneuve.

The origin of the alleged argument is unclear.

The motorist and the cyclist – who was riding on the street, not on the bicycle path – continued along de Maisonneuve.

The cyclist ended up travelling in a constricted space between the Jeep and a Purolator delivery truck parked on the north side of de Maisonneuve.

The cyclist fell and then the Jeep ran him over.

Witnesses at the scene could not confirm whether the cyclist had been wearing a helmet, although there was concern about the incident.

“We make bicycle paths for cyclists,” said one witness who didn’t want to be named.

“Why was he in the road?”

The stretch of de Maisonneuve between University and McGill College remained closed to traffic at 11 a.m.
