Four Vancouver Island families are out of their homes this morning after a fire ripped through a townhouse complex in Saanich.

The fire was sparked at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday at a construction site next door to the 4000-block of Cedar Hill Road, behind the Canadian Tire.

Crews had the fire under control shortly before 9 p.m.

Forty people have been evacuated from townhouse complex, but the majority are now being allowed to return home. Ten unites are heavily damaged.

Sgt. Julie Fast with Saanich Police told Global News the fire has now been deemed suspicious.

The fire is still smoldering and investigators are getting into the site now to take a closer look.

No one was injured in the fire and crews are still trying to determine what sparked the blaze.
