A driver is in custody after Surrey RCMP tracked down a badly-damaged car that allegedly hit a light standard, struck another vehicle and then drove away.

Mounties say they received several calls around 9:20 a.m. about a collision on 60 Avenue and King George Boulevard involving a dark-coloured Chrysler sedan that struck a light standard, which fell and crushed the roof of the car.

The Chrysler then struck another vehicle and came to a stop before heading eastbound on 60 Avenue.

Police say they received several reports of a badly-damaged car heading east, possibly missing a front tire and shooting sparks as it travelled down the road.

Thanks to calls from the public and debris the vehicle left behind in its wake, police managed to track down the vehicle in an alley near 138A Street and 60 Avenue. Mounties say the driver of the vehicle was located and taken into custody.
