Police marine units are out in full force this Victoria Day long weekend to kick off Boat Safety Awareness Week, an event designed to remind boaters to stay safe on the water.
Cst. Janet Stringer of the Vancouver Police Marine Unit said there were 24 boating-related deaths from drowning in 2015, many of which may have been preventable.

Stringer emphasized the importance of wearing a personal flotation device, adding that the Marine Unit has already been involved in two water rescues this year that involved someone not wearing a life jacket.
“It is the simplest life-saving strategy on the water,” she said.
Stringer said boaters should be aware of these safety tips:
- Wear a personal flotation device
- Do not drink
- Be aware of your cold-water environment and dress appropriately for the weather
- Educate yourself by taking a boating course
