KELOWNA — Truck thefts happen frequently in Kelowna and don’t often make the news.  But in this case, it was no ordinary truck.

Someone stole a five-ton, $85,000 truck belonging to a roofing company and the theft was caught on camera.

The theft happened last Sunday, early in the morning, in the industrial area off Sexsmith Road.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Surveillance video shows a man walking alone in a parking lot. A short time later, a black pick-up truck pulls up and a male is seen getting out of the vehicle. Minutes later, the five-ton truck is seen driving away.

The owners say it’s just one of a series of thefts in the area in recent days.

“We’ve been in contact with the RCMP and in the last few days there’s actually been quite a number of thefts around here,” says truck owner, Darran Light of Laing Roofing. “There was an F-350 taken from this area yesterday [Tuesday] and there was a dump truck taken two weeks ago from Kelowna Lite Kast. I talked to them and they’ve since recovered it. It was recovered yesterday in the Lumby area.”

Light says a witness reported seeing the stolen roofing truck driving across the Bennett bridge shortly after it was stolen.
