New downtown youth centre being “underused”: YFC

A strong desire to help troubled teenagers is one of the reasons behind Youth for Christ’s move to Higgins Avenue and Main Street.

Six months after opening its doors in the core area, though, the organization said parts of the facility is being underused.

“We are definitely trying to get the word out and will be for the next couple of years promoting the facility,” explained John Courtney.

At it’s peek, about 40 to 50 teens take advantage of the Centre for Youth Excellence drop-in hours. The highlight is the facility’s multi-million-dollar indoor skatepark, nearly 1,300 teens have taken advantage of it.

Officials say the Higgins and Main location hasn’t been a problem, “it’s a very secure building. We’ve just been incident-free. I’m really surprised how safe this place is, I was expecting this to be a huge challenge, said Courtney.

Just under $2 million is still needed to cover the total cost of the $13.8 million building. The federal government and the city pitched in $6.4 million for the project.
