Despite the controversy that follows U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, there’s no shortage of people wanting to work at the Vancouver hotel that bears his name.
More than 1,200 people have made the shortlist and are being interviewed today for a job at the Trump International Hotel and Tower.
Applicants are saying getting a job at the luxury hotel would be a great career move.
“I would like to still have good employment five to 10 years from now and I think this is a good opportunity for me,” said one server applicant, Gianfranco Loi.
The interviews are taking place at the Annex on Seymour Street in downtown Vancouver. Nearly 10,000 people applied and management is hoping to interview about 1,200 people over the next three days.
Only 200 to 300 people will be hired and applicants will need to go through four to five interviews. The general manager will personally interview everyone hired.
Not everyone has been on board with the addition of the Trump International Hotel and Tower.
In April, a Mexican man caused a stir on social media after hanging his country’s flag from the roof of the tower. Diego Saul Reyna, who was originally from Tuxtla Gutiérrez and now lives in B.C., said he placed the flag in protest to the comments Trump made about Mexican immigrants during the Republican race for U.S. President.
Last week, Donald Trump Jr. visited the hotel, which is still under construction, and made no apologies for his father.
“Everyone wants to be outraged about something, you know, usually in 140 characters or less because that grabs you a headline or that brings you a following with your either right-leaning or liberal-leaning side,” Trump Jr. said.
Despite the controversial candidate, 214 residential units at the tower are sold out and hotel rooms are booking up.
The hotel is slated to open in August.
