Kelowna Airport fire crews are on staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They never know when a major emergency will strike.
In the last year alone emergency crews have had to deal with a bomb threat and a plane skidding off the runway, but annual training helps ensure they’re ready for anything.
Live fire training was underway at the airport Tuesday.
“It keeps the guys ready and able to go at any given time,” said Kelowna airport assistant fire chief Darrell Belgrove. “[An emergency] can happen anytime and we want to be ready for that.”
“It’s extremely important,” said airport director Sam Samaddar. “We don’t have a lot of [major] incidents that occur and we’d like to keep it that way, stay proactive, [and] training allows you to keep your skills current in the event we should have an incident.”
The yearly training is mandatory for the airport’s 16 fire personnel on staff.
