Edmonton Police Service Hate Crimes Unit officers are investigating an assault on a 26-year-old man from this weekend who was allegedly targeted due to his sexual orientation, and was also subsequently robbed.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2012 Southwest Division members responded to a report of a personal robbery at 110 Street and 83 Avenue. The complainant reported to police that while walking from his residence to a grocery store just off Whyte Avenue, three male suspects drove past him and uttered several disparaging comments at him in relation to his sexual orientation.

A short while later the man was assaulted by one of the suspects who exited the vehicle. This caused the complainant to stumble and drop his iPhone. Several witnesses in the area ran to the man’s aid, at which time the suspect took the iPhone and ran back to the car. The car - a silver 2000 Acura 3.2TL with a spoiler – then fled the area.
