Halifax Chronicle Herald owner buys Antigonish Casket weekly newspaper

ANTIGONISH, N.S. – A Nova Scotia community newspaper that was owned by the Roman Catholic Church has been sold to the owner of the Halifax Chronicle Herald.

The Antigonish Casket was put up for sale last year by the Diocese of Antigonish to raise money for a class-action settlement with victims of sexual abuse.

The Casket says Brace Capital, a Halifax investment firm controlled by Herald owner Sarah Dennis, completed the transaction today.

The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The Casket is one of the oldest weekly newspapers in North America, having published for 160 years.

Its assets include a commercial printing operation in Antigonish and other printing companies in northeastern Nova Scotia.

Dennis told the Casket she’s pleased that a part of the province’s history will remain in the hands of an independent Nova Scotia company.

She says she looks forward to continuing a strong tradition of local news coverage.
