WESTMOUNT – Students at Westmount High School will now have the option to use the facilities of an all-gender restroom.
The idea was originally brought to the administration by a group of students who said that some did not feel comfortable using either the designated boys’ or girls’ bathrooms.
“We surveyed the student body and it showed that 80 per cent of the students were either in favour or indifferent,” said Michael Christofaro, the school’s principal.
The principal jumped on the idea and set up a new bathroom that can be used by all students.
Christofaro said diversity and inclusivity are important values to the student body of Westmount High, and this step forward was a very positive moment for pupils and parents.
“Parents felt this was very much in keeping with the culture that we have here at Westmount High School,” the principal said.
Curious students who poked their heads into the bathroom said the only difference they noticed was the facility was open to everyone.
