OLIVER – Telus says there will be a permanent fix to Oliver’s wireless woes in July.
Cell phone service in the area was impacted earlier this year when vandals brought down a tower at a wireless site in the area.
“In March, one or more individuals used tools to deliberately cut multiple guy wires that stabilized Telus’ wireless site on Oliver Mountain, causing the tower to collapse and disrupting wireless service,” says Telus spokesperson Liz Sauvé.

“What we did closely following the vandalism is we installed some wireless antennas on Oliver Mountain and that has been the temporary fix which is providing wireless service to Oliver right now.”

Now the company expects a long term fix, a new tower, to be up and running this summer.

Sauvé says in the meantime most Oliver residents and businesses “are back up to regular service with the temporary fix but there may be some more rural areas outside of the town of Oliver that were covered by the previous tower that was vandalized that now may have more intermittent service.”
“Once the permanent fix is in place, everyone will be back to where they were before the tower was vandalized,” promises Sauvé.
Sauvé couldn’t provide an estimate of the cost of the damages, but would say that setting up a new wireless site costs approximately $500,000.
