The rules governing fire pit use in Saskatoon

The Saskatoon Fire Department issues yearly reminder on the rules governing residential fire pits. File / Global News

SASKATOON – It’s a timely reminder sent out yearly, even moreso this year given the extreme fire danger. The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding everyone of the rule governing residential fire pits in the city.

Fire pit use is regulated under the city’s Fire and Protective Services bylaw. There are six conditions that must be followed when using pits:

  • the fire must be contained in a non-combustible fire box constructed of material such as cement, brick or metal and covered with a heavy gauge metal screen;
  • it must not exceed .61 cubic metres;
  • only seasoned wood or charcoal can be used as fuel;
  • no fires are allowed when weather conditions are favourable to create a running fire or allows smoke to be a nuisance to another person;
  • if smoke causes unreasonable interference with the use and enjoyment of another’s property, it must be extinguished immediately; and
  • there must be reasonable supervision of the fire at all times.

Officials say one important factor is to make sure the fire pit is located at least three metres from any combustible materials including fences and buildings.

They are also reminding fire pit users that that burning of tree branches, garden refuse, rubbish, dangerous goods or any material that will create dense black or foul odour is not permitted.

Pit fires that do not comply with the bylaws will be put out by the fire department.

Anyone wishing to report a fire or fire pit can do so by calling 306-975-3030.
