That milk can be life-changing for babies whose own mothers can’t produce enough of it.

The supply of donor milk to interior hospitals comes from out-of-province, but there is a special drive making it easier for women in B.C.’s Interior to donate.

For the first time, a breastfeeding advocacy group called Breastfeeding Matters in Kamloops is holding a milk drive. They are aiming to collect 200 pounds of human donor milk.

“The demand far exceeds what is available and the B.C. Women’s [Provincial] Milk Bank has issued several urgent pleas for milk donation. The most recent one was in March and that is when we decided that there is something we can do about that in this community,” says Joanne Juras with Breastfeeding Matter in Kamloops.

Donating mothers just need to get their milk to Kamloops and the organizers have arranged to ship the frozen milk donations en mass to the B.C. Women’s Provincial Milk Bank in Vancouver.
