KAMLOOPS – We donate blood, but what you may not know is that some mother’s also donate their breast milk.
That milk can be life-changing for babies whose own mothers can’t produce enough of it.
The supply of donor milk to interior hospitals comes from out-of-province, but there is a special drive making it easier for women in B.C.’s Interior to donate.
For the first time, a breastfeeding advocacy group called Breastfeeding Matters in Kamloops is holding a milk drive. They are aiming to collect 200 pounds of human donor milk.
Donating mothers just need to get their milk to Kamloops and the organizers have arranged to ship the frozen milk donations en mass to the B.C. Women’s Provincial Milk Bank in Vancouver.
That eliminates one of the biggest barriers that prevents interior moms from donating: shipping.
Breastfeeding Matters in Kamloops is asking moms interested in donating to go through a pre-screening and then drop off donations in Kamloops.
Those interested in getting more information about the drive can call Kamloops Public Health at 250-851-7362.
