Mission RCMP have a message for young drivers after an “L” driver had his car impounded for excessive speeding.

Mission RCMP Const. Alyn Beerda says the driver was clocked at 147 km/h in an 80 km/h zone near Highway 7 and Sylvester Road Monday afternoon.

Beerda says the “L” driver was the only person in the car and had no supervisor with him when he was pulled over.

The driver allegedly said he was speeding to get energy drinks for him and his girlfriend.

In British Columbia, “L” drivers are required to drive with a qualified supervisor in the front seat for at least 12 months. The supervisor has to be over 25 years old and have a valid driver’s licence.

They are also required to carry no more than two passengers, drive only between 5 a.m. and midnight, display a red “L” sign and have no alcohol in their body.

Beerda says the car was impounded for seven days, and the driver was issued a ticket for driving without a supervisor, but also for excessive speeding.

“With the weather being a lot better, people think to push the envelope for speed,” he says. “Just slow down and don’t be a whisk on the roadway.”

Beerda says the driver will likely lose his Learner’s licence over the incident.

Meanwhile, two high-end vehicles were impounded on Highway 7 by Ridge Meadows RCMP on Monday when the owners were found driving at more than 60 km/h over the posted 80 km/h speed limit.
