A number of local residents within Waterton Lakes National Park are concerned about the potential landing spot of the park’s upcoming Visitor Reception Centre. Bonnie Fromm, a local resident, started the “Save the Waterton Field” Facebook page which has nearly 900 likes. She also created a website that includes a petition. Fromm cited several concerns, including an increase in traffic in the area, and the building being too close to a playground.

“This is one of the few remaining green spaces in town,” said Fromm. “Kids love to come out here and play, and it’s a great place to see wildlife. We think it would be a huge detriment to the community to lose this green space.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Park officials say they’ve met with a range of stakeholders on the matter, including the Waterton Lakes Lease Holder Association, and the Chamber of Commerce. Fromm, however, says she and others have sent hundreds of emails to Parks Canada officials, with no response.

“Our biggest concern is the lack of consultation,” said Fromm. “I think they’re moving at such a speed that I think they think if they can ram this through they don’t have to take into account how the public feels.”

Despite some of the public not being on board with the proposed spot, the park believes it’s making the right decision.

“Every visitor comes to the townsite during their stay. So that means that we have maximum opportunity to connect with those people,” said Waterton Lakes National Park Superintendent Ifan Thomas. “It just makes sense to bring the visitor centre here amongst all the other facilities and all the services that people use when they come here to visit.”

The park plans to hold a public engagement session in May, but if those attending are hoping for a change in course, they’re out of luck.

“I think if the expectation is that we’re backing away from the decision of the location, no we’re not,” said Thomas. “We’re sticking with the decision. It is the best location to have a visitor centre to serve the public.”

Bonnie Fromm will be meeting with Foothills, High River MP John Barlow on May 20th to discuss the proposed site.
