SASKATOON – Fathers and sons find different ways to bond with each other. Some bond over a round of golf, or by playing catch in the back yard. But for Daryl and Brian Symington, it’s roping steers.
This weekend the father-son duo will put their skills to the test in the team roping event at the Saskatoon Spring Rodeo.
“Team roping is just a good way for an older guy like me to stay involved and kind of stay active,” chuckled Daryl Symington.
Daryl loves roping steers with his son, but he know’s that Brian’s true passion is bull riding. Initially Daryl didn’t want his son to ride bulls, but it didn’t surprise Daryl when Brain took up an interest in the sport. After all, Daryl was a professional bull rider himself.
“We didn’t really want (Brian) to ride bull,” said Daryl. “But just the way things went, he pretty well did the same as I did.”

Brian’s goal is to follow in his father’s footsteps by working his way up Canada’s bull riding rankings. In 2011 Brian earned the title of boys steer riding champion at Canadian Finals Rodeo. Now he’s breaking his way into the pro ranks.
“I want to go as far as I can. To the NFR, or the PBR finals,”said Brian. “As far as I can take it.”
The Saskatoon Spring Rodeo kicks off on Friday, April 22 at SaskTel Centre.
