Localized flooding affecting the Canora, Sask. area

A rapid snowpack melt due to unseasonably warm temperatures is causing localized flooding in the Canora, Sask. region. Calvin To / Global News

Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency (WSA) is warning of flooding in the Canora area. Localized flooding may affect the Good Spirit Lake due to rapid snowpack melting due to higher than normal temperatures.

They are asking people to be aware when travelling in these areas, as bank flows and road ways could be over topping.

Officials said flows in the contributing area appear to range from a 1-in-10 year to a 1-in-50 year flood event.

Most tributaries have already peaked and are expected to recede in the coming days.

Good Spirit Lake is expected to peak at 485.4 metres in early May, which is 0.15 metres lower than the 2014 peak.

Inflows to the lake over the next week could impact some low-lying development around the lake.

WSA officials say flows in other parts of east-central Saskatchewan, including the Red Deer River, Sawn River and upper portions of the Assiniboine River Basin are in the 1-in-five to 1-in-10 year range.
