RCMP say several people were sent to hospital after a motorist drove into oncoming traffic in Surrey’s Cedar Hill neighbourhood Sunday morning. Bystanders then subdued the man until police arrived.
Witnesses say they saw an Acura drive eastbound along 96 Avenue and 128 Street and then veer into westbound lanes. The speeding vehicle struck a Subaru and then collided with a Toyota and a BMW before coming to a stop on the median.
Several people in the area rushed in to help and witnesses said the male suspect threatened people with a knife. Good Samaritans restrained the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody.
Several people were transported to hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.
Police said they are recommending several charges against the driver and are investigating whether drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.
The suspect is also facing charges from a separate incident. Mounties said they tried to pull the same driver over on Wednesday and he failed to stop. They decided not to pursue him, but made a note of the vehicle and the driver’s appearance. An officer who was involved in Wednesday’s incident recognized him at Sunday morning’s accident.
The 19-year-old suspect remains in custody.
