WINNIPEG – It didn’t feel much like football season outside but around 500 young football players learned the skills of the game on Sunday at Investors Group Field. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers held their Futures Flag Football Skills Camp for all players registered to play flag football through Football Manitoba.
“Flag is just a great sport, a great introduction to football for kids.” said Blue Bombers President and CEO Wade Miller.

Kids aged seven through 17 took part in football specific drills. There were six different 70 minute sessions held throughout the day.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers players past and present, Manitoba Bisons players, and certified coaches put players through drills to help refine their fundamental football skills. Throwing, agility and flag pulling were just some of the techniques that were taught.

“They’re learning all the basics.” Miller said. “The throwing, the catching, the running, how to hold the football, learning some defensive skills, learning how to take away the flags and it’s all the fundamentals of football. So it’s a great introduction for all them and they get to play where the pros play.”
Current Bombers players Rory Kohlert, Matthias Goossen and Matt Bucknor were brought in for the event. Bombers alumni Dave Vankoughnett and Glen Scrivener were also coaching up the players.
The camp was a lead-up to the upcoming flag football season.
