Police investigate after New Brunswick man, 43, dies while in custody

TRACADIE-SHEILA, N.B. – Police in New Brunswick are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 43-year-old man while in custody.

The Tracadie-Sheila man was arrested by police at 4 a.m. on Sunday following complaints about an intoxicated man knocking on people’s doors.

The RCMP say he was taken into custody and released shortly before noon, but three hours later officers received a report that the same man was trying to break into a house.

He was arrested and taken back into custody.

The Mounties say that during a routine check at 9:25 p.m., a guard noticed the man was unresponsive and officers tried to resuscitate him.

He was later taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Bathurst, N.B., police are leading the investigation into the man’s death.

The RCMP have not identified the man as they try to notify his family.
