CALGARY– Donna and Cameron Beattie have been fighting with Enmax for two years to be able to park their vehicles in their own driveway.

Their parking pad backs onto an alley behind their home in southwest Calgary.

Two years ago, a utility pole in the alley was replaced and new guy wires to anchor the pole to the ground were moved, which then blocked the entrance to their driveway.

“They put the wire right in front of our gate,” Donna Beattie said. “A year later they finally came back and changed it where we had some clearance. Everything was fine. Then they came back and put it this way and now I’m to the point where I can’t use my pad like I have in the past.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The Beatties said it’s too dangerous to try to drive under the guy wire into the driveway, and have been trying to get Enmax to change it for a year.

But after Global News contacted the company, spokesperson Doris Kaufmann Woodcock said an investigation discovered the job wasn’t inspected properly and admitted they made a mistake.

“It was really only a result of this that we actually determined that it was in fact set in the wrong place and needs to go back,” Kaufmann Woodcock said. “Now we definitely want to make that right and go back and help that customer out.”

Enmax will move the guy wires within a few weeks, but still needs approval from Telus and Shaw, who share the utility lines.

Donna and Cameron said it’s too bad they had to go to the media to fix the problem.
