It happened in the 1500 block of 49 Street S.E. just after midnight.

Police said a masked man forced his way into the home through the back door, entering the bedroom where the elderly couple lay fast asleep. The intruder demanded money from the couple, and assaulted them both with a weapon before he left the home.

Both victims, a woman in her 60s and a man in his early 70s, were taken to hospital with serious head injuries where they remain in stable condition.

The man left the scene on foot.

Police said the suspect has been described as between 25 to 35-years-old with a heavy build. He was wearing a hood and ski mask.

Investigators said nothing appeared to have been stolen from the home.

“If you see something that looks out of place at your neighbour’s house, call us,” S/Sgt. Lon Brewster said in a morning news conference. “We don’t mind having a car come by and just check on things.”
