EDMONTON – A rare sight, high up in the trees, is greeting golfers this spring at Edmonton’s Victoria Golf Course.

“It’s pretty rare to see owls let alone Great Horned Owls and to be able to see them in the daytime– because they blend in so well,” said Kevin Hogan, head professional with the golf course.

Hogan says one of the groundskeepers noticed quite a few feathers around a group of trees. He looked up and noticed two owls in the trees.

“It’s quite rare to see one, let alone two in the same tree. It’s quite a unique experience,” Hogan said.

Hogan believes the owls to be Great Horned Owls but hasn’t contacted anyone to be sure.

The Great Horned Owl is Alberta’s official bird. They are common throughout the province. Pairs mate for life and share their duties raising owlets. They usually lay about two to three eggs in late February and early March.

“They’re quite peaceful and it’s quite neat to see down there.”
