EDMONTON – Strathcona County fire crews said high winds caused them some trouble when fighting a large fire on a rural farm southeast of Edmonton Saturday evening.

Fire crews were called to the brush fire at around 6:30 p.m. in the area of Township Road 514 and Meridian Road.

“When we arrived there were three or four out-buildings that were already on fire. It was approaching the main houses on the property. We were able to stop it before it got to the main houses and establish a perimeter around it,” Deputy Chief Devin Capcara with Strathcona County fire said.

The fire was under control by 7 p.m., but Capcara said the wind was an added battle for fire crews.

“When the wind’s going this fast and you’ve got lots of grass and lots of brush, it moves really, really quickly. It’s hard for us to keep it from spreading.”

The smoke was visible from Highway 14 and several roads in the area were shut down for a period of time Saturday evening as a precaution.

Fire crews are working with the RCMP to determine a cause.
