RCMP bomb squad investigates explosions under Penticton bridge

PENTICTON – The RCMP Explosives Disposals Unit is investigating a series of small explosions and fire under a Penticton bridge.

Police and the fire department attended to the structure on Forestbrook Drive and Brooks Place just before 9:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The fire, directly below a natural gas line attached to the wooden bridge, was extinguished and a partially burned incendiary device and small tins of flammable materials were seized for forensic examination.

RCMP also found another item that was mostly consumed and may have been the source of the explosions heard by nearby residents.

“Although damage was superficial in nature, the potential for damage to city infrastructure and the natural gas line was significant,” said Supt. Kevin Hewco in a news release. “We have dedicated resources assigned to this investigation to ensure the safety of this community”.
