Winnipeg Goldeyes make addition to their infield

WINNIPEG – The countdown to spring training has already begun for the Winnipeg Goldeyes with a little over a month until camp begins.

The Goldeyes announced the signing of first baseman Jacob Rogers on Tuesday.

Rogers, 26, played in the Chicago Cubs organization least season. He split time between the AA Southern League’s Tennessee Smokies and the High-A Carolina League’s Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Florida native hit a combined .249 with 13 home runs and 82 RBI. The left-handed hitter helped the Pelicans win the Carolina League championship.

“I’m pleased to add Jake to our club,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney through a media release. “He will be a big presence in the middle of our order that knows how to drive in runs.”

Rogers was drafted on three separate occasions. The Boston Red Sox selected Rogers in the 29th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. Rogers was then selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 44th round in 2010. He re-entered the draft again two years later and was once again taken by the Cubs, this time in the 40th round of the 2012 draft.
