EDMONTON – A four-year-old child has been airlifted to hospital in Calgary following a serious collision on Highway 2, about four kilometers south of Highway 72 – near Airdrie.

The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Stuart Brideaux with EMS said the crash involved an SUV and a car, both travelling southbound. Both vehicles eventually came to a stop in the southbound lanes. A woman in her 30’s driving the SUV was taken to hospital in stable non-life threatening condition. A boy in the backseat was flown by STARS to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in serious but stable condition.

Both occupants of the car were rushed to hospital, a man in his early 20’s and a woman in her mid- 20’s. The man was taken to the Foothills Hospital in serious, but stable condition. The woman was taken to the Peter Lougheed Hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition.

The area is currently blocked by debris and traffic is at a standstill. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area altogether.

Emergency crews are still on-scene as well as a collision analyst.

A female driver has been arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

RCMP continue to investigate.
