Former supermodel Iman has had a rough 2016 so far.
After losing her longtime husband David Bowie in early January, Iman broke the news Friday morning that her mother, Maryan Baadi, had also passed away. She posted a photo from her and Bowie’s wedding to her Instagram page.
“Saddened by the death of my mom Maryan Baadi,” she wrote. “May Allah grant her the highest jennah. I beg that you respect my family’s privacy during our time of grief #ripmaryanbaadi.”

In the past, Iman, 60, has been very proud and vocal about her parents’ lifetimes of activism. In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, she said “My mother was an activist, so was my father. They came from a generation of young Somalis who were actively involved in getting independence for Somalia in 1960.”
“So I remember when I was five, how busy our house was,” she added. “People would come in the middle of the night, meetings after meetings, and protests and all that. I grew up in the midst of all of that. And she instilled that in me. The fact that nobody can take your self-worth unless you give your consent.”
It’s not known how old Baadi was.
