REGINA – Environment Canada has confirmed that one tornado did touch down in southern Saskatchewan, but says there could have been more.
On Tuesday, a massive storm system moved across most of the province, bringing high winds, hail, a lot of rain – and hundreds of reports of funnel clouds and tornadoes.
John Paul Cragg, a meteorologist for the Saskatchewan region with Environment Canada, says a tornado briefly touched down near Caron, about 100 kilometres west of Regina.
He says they got another report of a twister in Hodgeville, about 280 kilometres southwest of Regina, that they will investigate further.
Cragg says the federal agency got 500 reports of funnel clouds on Monday and Tuesday, and it will take some time to go through all of them to pick out which ones to investigate.
Environment Canada is now studying video, poring through photos and interviewing witnesses to find out exactly what happened.
“We get reports from storm spotters and if we have a report about a tornado touchdown, we give the person that reported the tornado a call and then we can talk to them about the type of damage, what happened, what they saw and things like that in order to compile an accurate report of the tornadoes,” Cragg said.
