CALGARY – The trial for three people accused of murdering Calgary father Ryan Lane continued on Tuesday with the jury being shown pictures of what the Crown called a “homemade burn barrel” it alleges was used to destroy Lane’s body after he was lured, kidnapped and killed.
Lane’s disappearance in February of 2012 spurred a massive search.
Eventually, police officers were able to zero in on a 13,000 acre zone west of Beiseker, thanks in part to information from cellphone tower pings.
Dozens of officers scoured the area and cadaver dogs were brought in to assist with the search.
On June 21, 2012, a Calgary Police Service search manager made a grisly discovery in an inactive gravel pit.
“I located what appeared to be a barrel…I located what appeared to be bone, a vertebrae,” Cst. Michael Calhoun testified on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the jury was shown pictures of the barrel, which was comprised of three steel rings.
The court also heard an anthropologist was taken to the burn site to help with the investigation.
Sheena Cuthill, her husband Tim Rempel, and his brother Will Rempel, are all accused of kidnapping and first-degree murder in the case.

The Crown’s theory is Lane was murdered over a custody battle regarding a child he shared with Cuthill.
The trial is in its third week of testimony.
