Moncton locks out bus drivers and mechanics to kick-start negotiations

MONCTON, N.B. – The union representing Moncton’s locked out bus service workers says it’s surprised, saddened and frustrated with the city’s move.

Moncton’s bus service stopped running today after the city locked out Codiac Transpo workers.

George Turple, spokesman for Local 1290 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, says he expected the city would have given the union at least 24 hours’ notice.

Turple says he expects to talk with city manager Jacques Dube on Wednesday to see if negotiations can resume.

City officials have said the bus service will only resume when a new contract agreement is reached with the union.

Roughly 90 bus drivers, mechanics and other workers have been without a collective agreement for two years.

The union has been in a legal strike position since April.
