Family Matters: parenting author Barbara Coloroso explains the difference between punishment and discipline

Dos and don’ts of doling out discipline
WATCH ABOVE: Many parents don't differentiate between the words punishment and discipline when it comes to raising their children. But one parenting expert says there's a big difference between the two, and understanding that can be a crucial tool for helping mothers and fathers. Laurel Gregory reports.

Parents have never had more information at their fingertips about how to raise children. There are countless books on everything from baby sleep schedules, to time-outs and discipline.

Known for bestsellers like Kids are worth it! Giving your child the gift of inner discipline, veteran author Barbara Coloroso has been writing about the subject for close to four decades.

While she’s updated her books, she hasn’t taken anything out because she says the goal of “raising responsible, resourceful, resilient, compassionate human beings” hasn’t changed.

“What’s exciting for me is I’m on the third generation now,” Coloroso said. “Parents are coming with their little ones in their arms saying, ‘My grandmother gave me this book.'”

Parenting workshops in Edmonton use Coloroso’s principles in teaching kids about consequences.
