COLDSTREAM – Plans for an amphitheater overlooking Kalamalka Lake are stirring up controversy.

The plan is to turn a grassy gorge at Okanagan College’s Vernon campus into an amphitheatre.

The society behind the project envisions concertgoers watching performances while taking in the Okanagan’s natural beauty.

However, the Okanagan Summer Festival Society’s dream of a venue overlooking the lake sounds more like a nightmare to area residents who have concerns about noise, traffic and safety.

They don’t think the gorge, which is close to residential areas, is an appropriate place for an amphitheatre and have started a petition calling for the proposed facility to be built elsewhere.

The proponents believe the topography of the area will help contain noise and they plan to develop parking and traffic management systems for events. The society also says the types of events they plan to host at the amphitheatre will not attract people prone to vandalism or trespassing.
