TORONTO – An elderly woman has died after police say a vehicle plunged into the Credit River in Mississauga Monday afternoon.

“Despite best efforts from EMS and hospital staff, the elderly female has passed away,” Peel Regional Police announced on their Twitter page Monday evening.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into the Credit River just west of Stavebank Road, near Lakeshore Road and Mississauga Road, at about 4:20 p.m.

Close to an hour later, a large tow truck removed the vehicle from the water after divers secured a winch to the submerged car with the passenger inside, police said.

The woman was taken to hospital without vital signs as paramedics and hospital staff attempted to revive her.

Peel Regional Police Const. George Tudos said the car entered the water through a nearby boat ramp and that efforts to remove the car were hampered by heavy currents and cold water.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“They had some troubles with the currents in the Credit River as it empties into Lake Ontario,” Tudos said. “That was one of the issues.”

Francis Kessler, an employee at a restaurant on the other side of the river, called 911.

“We didn’t actually think there was anyone in there at first,” she told Global News. “When we saw a bunch of people running along the bank here and coming over the fence and someone had a lifesaver; that’s when we figured there was someone in the car.
