SASKATOON – This Saturday marks Earth Hour, where for one hour everyone is encouraged to turn off their lights to raise awareness about climate change.

The movement was started by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 and has been marked in cities around the world every year since. In 2015, SaskPower reported a 9 per cent decrease in residential electricity demand over Earth Hour.

Some people take it one step farther, challenging themselves to turn off anything that needs power. The City of Edmonton is even challenging people to go an hour without checking social media.
