WINNIPEG — River Heights residents were starting to feel like crime in their neighbourhood was decreasing, but in the last two weeks there have been a number of incidents.
“It seems like there’s more of a recognition that last year wasn’t an anomaly, it seems like this is going to be continuing this year,” Jon Waldman said.
Waldman started the Facebook group ‘Smashed Window Club’ a year ago when the neighbourhood had this same program. Residents also agreed to start a neighbourhood watch. Waldman suspects the increase in crime could be due to the warmer weather.

“We’ve had some people reporting break ins of cars and trucks but we had a couple home invasions that have been reported in the group as well,” Waldman said.
Lee Doerksen said his home was broken into on Monday. He was home at the time and is thankful that the rest of his family wasn’t. He believes more needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.
“Imagine someone kicks down your back door, while you’re in the house, in this neighbourhood. It says there are people is this neighbourhood that have no concern for our rights,” Doerksen said.
Winnipeg police told Global News they are currently investigating these incidents.
