LAKE COUNTRY, B.C. – Early plans for the Okanagan Rail Trail between Kelowna and Vernon were rolled out to the public Monday night.
The Oyama event was the first of four open houses to take place in communities affected by the corridor.
“The whole idea is to get the community involved,” said Duane Thomson, volunteer with the Okanagan Rail Trail initiative. “We want community buy-in. This is going to be our trail, our community’s trail.”
At least $5 million will have to be raised in the community to develop the 47.9-km corridor previously owned by CN Rail, “to get a basic trail, 12 feet wide, from Kelowna to Vernon,” said Thomson.
The ideas collected will develop the design, which will then end up before councils in local communities.
The next meeting is Tuesday, March 15 at the Parkinson Rec Centre in Kelowna from 4 – 6:30 p.m.
Similar meetings take place Wednesday at the Winfield Memorial Hall in Lake Country, and Thursday at the Coldstream Municipal Hall in the North Okanagan Regional District community.
