EDMONTON — The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate whether interaction with Edmonton police members had anything to do with a collision that killed two people in northeast Edmonton over the weekend.
At around 5:25 a.m. Sunday, a vehicle in the area of 82 Street and 121 Avenue came to the attention of an Edmonton police officer. The officer, who was driving a marked police cruiser, began to follow the vehicle but it sped away, according to ASIRT.
A short police pursuit began, but because of concerns about public safety the officer stopped following the vehicle.
About five minutes later, the vehicle was involved in a three-vehicle collision in the area of Manning Drive and 50 Street. Two passengers from the vehicle, a 29-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were killed in the collision.
The 25-year-old man driving the vehicle and one other passenger, a 23-year-old woman, were taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The people inside the other two vehicles were not injured.
The cause of the collision is now under investigation by the Edmonton Police Service. ASIRT members are working to determine if the police interaction with the vehicle had any impact on the collision.
The EPS said Sunday it cannot provide further details on its part of the investigation because ASIRT is now involved.
ASIRT is called in to investigate any incident involving police that results in serious injury or death.
